UP Warriorz Squad 2027
UP Warriorz made the biggest changes of any team for 2027. They released nine players, traded Tara Norris to Mumbai Indians, and go into the auction with just 10 players and the biggest purse in the league, ₹3.75 crore. Part of our Women’s Premier League 2027.
UPW 2027 key details
UP Warriorz squad 2027 in short: 10 players, Meg Lanning as captain, and eight spots to fill, three of them for overseas players. UPW have ₹3.75 crore, by far the biggest purse in the league and about ₹47 lakh for every open spot. They must buy at least five players to reach the 15-player minimum.
UPW have struggled since their first season, when they reached the Eliminator. They finished fourth in 2024 and last in both 2025 and 2026. That is why they made the biggest changes on retention day, releasing nine players including Amy Jones, Chloe Tryon and Deandra Dottin.
The players they kept are high quality: Deepti Sharma, Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield, Sophie Ecclestone and Shikha Pandey are all international stars. This page has the full squad with prices, the squad by role, our best XI, the auction plan, the captain, coach and owner, UPW’s record in every season, and our view on how they should spend the biggest purse in Kochi.

UPW squad by role
Batters
UPW’s batting starts with two Australians. Meg Lanning, one of the most successful captains in cricket history, was the top run-scorer in the first WPL season in 2023 with 345 runs. Phoebe Litchfield is one of the brightest young batters in the world, though she missed the end of 2026 with a quad injury. Pratika Rawal, India’s opener, and Harleen Deol give them Indian top-order options, and Simran Shaikh is a hitter.
Wicketkeepers
Shipra Giri is the only keeper left, retained at ₹10 lakh. Amy Jones, the England keeper-batter, has been released, so UPW must buy a keeper. This is their single most urgent need.
All-rounders
Deepti Sharma is the only all-rounder in the squad, and she is a great one. She was Player of the Series in 2024 and became the most expensive player of the 2026 mega auction when UPW used their Right to Match card to keep her at ₹3.2 crore. Releasing Chloe Tryon, Deandra Dottin and Charli Knott has left a big hole in the all-rounder group.
Bowlers
Sophie Ecclestone, the England left-arm spinner, is one of the best T20 bowlers in the world. Shikha Pandey, retained at ₹2.4 crore, swings the new ball, and Kranti Gaud is a young India seamer. With Deepti, that is a strong core, but there is little depth behind it.
UPW players to watch in 2027
Deepti Sharma
The most expensive player in the squad at ₹3.2 crore. Deepti was Player of the Series in 2024 and is the heart of the team: off-spin in the middle overs, runs in the middle order, and plenty of captaincy experience after leading UPW in 2025.
Phoebe Litchfield
Litchfield is one of the best young batters in the world and opened with Lanning for big scores in 2026 before a quad injury ended her season. A full season from her would change UPW’s batting.
Sophie Ecclestone
The England left-arm spinner is one of the most accurate T20 bowlers anywhere. Retained at just ₹85 lakh, she is one of the best-value players in the league.
Kranti Gaud
The young India seamer was retained at ₹50 lakh and has become a regular in the national team. With Shikha Pandey, she gives UPW an all-Indian new-ball pair, which frees overseas slots for batting and all-round power.
UPW best playing XI for WPL 2027
UPW cannot pick a full XI from their own players yet. This is the best XI from the current squad, with the spots the auction must fill.
| No. | Player | Role | Job in the XI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Phoebe Litchfield | Batter (OS) | Opener |
| 2 | Pratika Rawal | Batter | Opener |
| 3 | Meg Lanning (C) | Batter (OS) | Top-order anchor |
| 4 | Harleen Deol | Batter | Middle order |
| 5 | Deepti Sharma | All-Rounder | Off-spin and middle-order runs |
| 6 | Auction buy | Overseas all-rounder | Power hitting and seam, replaces Tryon or Dottin |
| 7 | Auction buy | Keeper-batter | Replaces Amy Jones |
| 8 | Simran Shaikh | Batter | Lower-order hitter |
| 9 | Sophie Ecclestone | Bowler (OS) | Left-arm spin |
| 10 | Shikha Pandey | Bowler | New-ball swing |
| 11 | Kranti Gaud | Bowler | Seam |
Why this matters: UPW’s top five and bowling core are strong. What they lack is everything in between: a keeper-batter, a finisher and a seam-bowling all-rounder. Those three buys decide whether this squad can compete.
What will change: with three overseas slots, UPW can buy one overseas all-rounder for the XI and two overseas players as cover. A keeper-batter and a spinner or second seamer from the Indian pool would complete the side, and Simran Shaikh would probably drop out.
Who UPW kept, and who they let go
UPW kept 10 players and released nine: Amy Jones, Chloe Tryon, Deandra Dottin, Charli Knott, Kiran Navgire, Asha Sobhana, Shweta Sehrawat, Gongadi Trisha and Suman Meena. They also traded Tara Norris to Mumbai Indians for her ₹10 lakh fee.
Amy Jones leaving creates the keeper gap. Chloe Tryon and Deandra Dottin were the overseas power hitters. Tryon is in the auction at ₹30 lakh, so UPW could buy her back. Jones and Dottin are not in the pool.
The Indian releases are just as interesting. Kiran Navgire (₹40 lakh base), Asha Sobhana (₹30 lakh), Shweta Sehrawat and Gongadi Trisha (both ₹10 lakh) are all in the auction, so UPW can rebuild with players they know at lower prices.
UPW have spent ₹11.25 crore on 10 players. Deepti, Shikha and Lanning alone cost ₹7.5 crore. The decision to clear out the rest is a bet that they can buy a better supporting cast at the auction.
UPW auction plan: ₹3.75 cr for 8 slots
UPW are the team everyone will be watching on 28 October. ₹3.75 crore is more than three times what any other team has, except Gujarat Giants with ₹1.25 crore. They need at least five players and can buy up to eight.
The money means UPW can win almost any bidding war they choose. Sophie Molineux, the Australian left-arm spinning all-rounder at ₹50 lakh base, is the likeliest big-ticket target, and she could become the most expensive player of the night. A keeper-batter is the other must-buy, and UPW may compete with Delhi Capitals for Taniya Bhatia or G Kamalini.
The smart plan is to spend big on two players (one overseas all-rounder, one Indian keeper-batter), then use the rest on Indian depth and two overseas back-ups. The danger is overpaying early and running short for the last few slots.
Players UPW could target on 28 October
| Player | Country | Role | Base price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sophie Molineux | Australia | All-Rounder | ₹50 L | Left-arm spin and top-order batting; our pick for top buy |
| Chloe Tryon | South Africa | All-Rounder | ₹30 L | Buy back their power-hitting all-rounder |
| G Kamalini | India | Batter / Keeper | ₹40 L | Young keeper-batter to replace Amy Jones |
| Heather Graham | Australia | All-Rounder | ₹40 L | Seam-bowling all-rounder |
| Kiran Navgire | India | Batter | ₹40 L | Buy back a big-hitting Indian batter |
| Sneh Rana | India | All-Rounder | ₹30 L | Experienced spin and batting depth |
Base prices are from the official auction list of 146 players. The auction starts at 5:30 PM IST on Wednesday, 28 October at the Grand Hyatt Kochi.
UPW captain, coach and owner
| Role | Name | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Meg Lanning | Named captain for 2026; led DC to the first three finals |
| Head coach | Abhishek Nayar | Head coach in 2026 |
| Owner | Capri Global | Bought the team for ₹757 crore in 2023 |
| Home city | Lucknow | Home ground: Ekana Cricket Stadium. A new stadium in Varanasi is being considered as a WPL 2027 venue |
Meg Lanning joined UPW in the 2026 mega auction and was named captain before the season. She captained Delhi Capitals to the first three WPL finals and led Australia to multiple world titles. Her first season at UPW was hard, but she remains one of the best leaders in the game. Before her, Alyssa Healy captained UPW in 2023 and 2024, and Deepti Sharma in 2025.
Abhishek Nayar, the former India all-rounder and well-known batting coach, was UPW’s head coach in 2026. The big rebuild suggests the management wants players who fit his plans.
UPW are owned by Capri Global, a financial services group. It paid ₹757 crore for the franchise in 2023, the lowest of the five winning bids. UPW are the only WPL team without a sister franchise in the men’s IPL.
UP Warriorz in the WPL: season by season
| Season | Finish | Captain | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 3rd (Eliminator) | Alyssa Healy | Reached the playoffs; lost the Eliminator to MI |
| 2024 | 4th (league stage) | Alyssa Healy | Deepti Sharma was Player of the Series |
| 2025 | 5th (league stage) | Deepti Sharma | Finished bottom |
| 2026 | 5th (league stage) | Meg Lanning | Finished bottom again; Litchfield injured late in the season |
UPW had a promising first season. They finished third in 2023 and reached the Eliminator, where Mumbai Indians beat them in the game best remembered for Issy Wong’s hat-trick. Since then they have gone backwards. In 2024 they finished fourth, despite Deepti Sharma being named Player of the Series. In 2025 and 2026, they finished last.
The 2026 season started with real hope after a big mega auction. Lanning and Litchfield took them to 187 against Mumbai Indians early in the season, but UPW could not keep it going, and Litchfield’s quad injury late in the season hurt badly.
Two last-place finishes in a row explain the rebuild. UPW have kept the players they think can win and given themselves the money to build around them.
UPW 2027 strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- The biggest purse in the league: ₹3.75 crore, about ₹47 lakh per slot.
- A world-class core: Deepti, Lanning, Litchfield, Ecclestone and Shikha.
- Three overseas slots open, the most of any team.
- Meg Lanning’s captaincy experience in WPL finals.
- Freedom to build a new middle order exactly as they want.
Weaknesses
- Only 10 players; must buy at least five.
- Shipra Giri is the only keeper since Amy Jones left.
- Deepti is the only all-rounder in the squad.
- Finished last in 2025 and 2026.
- Risk of overspending early and missing late-round value.
Our view: UPW will decide what the auction looks like. With ₹3.75 crore, they can make Molineux the most expensive player of the night and still afford a keeper-batter and depth. If they buy well, their XI could have Litchfield, Lanning, Deepti, Molineux and Ecclestone, and that is a playoff team.
The risk is spending like a team in a hurry. Our advice: get Molineux and a keeper first, buy back Tryon cheaply if possible, and fill the rest with uncapped Indians who already know the set-up. Done right, UPW can jump from fifth to the playoffs.
