Carlos Yulo’s golden double
The Olympic champion delivered two golds at Rainbow Hall in Nagoya, winning the men’s floor exercise and the vault. His brother Eldrew Yulo added a bronze on the horizontal bar.
EJ Obiena: Asia’s pole vault king again
On a rainy 29 September at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, Obiena was the only athlete in the field to clear 5.75m, then cleared 5.91m to break his own Asian Games record of 5.90m from Hangzhou. It was his second straight Asian Games title.
Taekwondo’s big day
Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape won the country’s fourth gold in the mixed individual virtual event on 2 October, adding to his bronze in individual poomsae. Kurt Barbosa, Tachiana Mangin and Juliana Mykhail Candelaria all won silver, making taekwondo the Philippines’ most successful sport by medal count.
Gilas: heartbreak for the men, history for the women
The defending champions Gilas Pilipinas went out in the group stage. They lost 85-89 to Bahrain, beat Kazakhstan 109-78, then lost 61-105 to China, missing the quarter-finals on point difference. In the women’s 5×5, Gilas Women beat Kazakhstan 86-58 to open their campaign and reached the quarter-finals before losing 83-71 to Chinese Taipei, finishing fifth — matching Hangzhou. The 3×3 women went further, beating Thailand 13-8 in the semi-final and winning silver after a 21-11 final loss to Japan — the Philippines’ first-ever Asian Games 3×3 medal.
Paalam’s narrow miss in the boxing ring
Olympic medallist Carlo Paalam reached the final but settled for silver after a split decision went to Japan’s Rui Yamaguchi on 2 October. Eumir Marcial did not take part.
