This was kabaddi’s ninth consecutive Asian Games appearance. The sport entered the programme at Beijing 1990 with a six-team, men-only competition and has featured in every edition since. The women’s event was added in 2010.
Asian Games 2026 Kabaddi Venue and Format
All matches were played at the Tōkai Citizens Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture, near Nagoya, from 21 to 26 September 2026.
The format was the same for both competitions:
- Teams were split into two groups and played a single round-robin within their group.
- The top two from each group advanced to the semi-finals.

How the Tournament Played Out
India — still the benchmark
India arrived as defending champions in both events after their Hangzhou double, when the men beat Iran 33-29 and the women edged Chinese Taipei 26-25. The men came with a heavily rebuilt squad but went unbeaten. They hammered Thailand 66-28 in the semi-final, then recovered from an 18-17 half-time deficit against Iran, with Arjun Deshwal and Devank leading the raids and Sumit anchoring the defence. The women, led by captain Ritu Negi and Pushpa Rana, also won every match, beating Iran twice: 37-23 in the group and 37-34 in the final.
Iran — the great rivals, again
Iran is the only nation besides India to have won Asian Games kabaddi gold in both the men’s and women’s events, sweeping both titles at Jakarta 2018. Veteran defender Fazel Atrachali captained the men at his fifth Games. Iran were the most dominant side in either group stage, beating Thailand 83-27 and outscoring their opponents by 164 points, but they again finished second to India.
