RPS vs MI Rising Pune Supergiant Vs Mumbai Indians Team strength and weakness
Rising Pune Supergiants Strengths: With the likes of Steven Smith, MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Ben Stokes around in the line-up, batting is clearly the strength of RPS. In fact, currently, RPS is looking to be one of the strongest batting line-ups in this IPL along with the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Meanwhile, with Dhoni no longer having the burden of captaincy, we can expect him to bat up the order, preferably at number 4 or 5. This will allow him to spend some more time at the crease. He can also play more freely. So, don’t be surprised if you see Dhoni coming out and attacking the bowlers right from the start of his innings.
Along with him, skipper Smith’s recent batting form is also going be an x-factor for RPS. He will most probably bat at number 3 and take care of the middle order, along with the likes of Rahane and Manoj Tiwary. Down the order, the big hitting Stokes also can be a key strength for RPS.
Rising Pune Supergiants Weaknesses:
Bowling seems to be the major weakness of this team. After their two key players – Ravichandran Ashwin and Mitchell Marsh were ruled out of this year’s IPL, the bowling plans of RPS is definitely going to be hampered. Ashwin’s absence especially will hurt them the most. On the slow, low conditions of Pune, the off-spinner could have been quite handy.
However, on this absence, the likes of Imran Tahir, Adam Zampa, and Stokes will mostly take care of the bowling duties for RPS. Others like Rajat Bhatia, Ankit Sharma, Jaydev Unadkat and Ashoke Dinda will play the supporting roles.
Mumbai Indians Strength:
A settled line-up Mumbai Indians strength. This core group has been around for quite a few years now and everyone in the team is aware of their responsibilities.
Their skipper Rohit Sharma regaining his full fitness ahead of the start of the event is a big sigh of relief for this team. He is their main batsman, along with Lendl Simmons, Jos Butler, Ambati Rayudu and wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel.
In the bowling department, the combination of Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Tim Southee, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya make for a good pace attack. Harbhajan Singh is their lead spinner and the likes of Shreyas Gopal, Karn Sharma, J Suchith and Kunal Pandya can be partner him occasionally.
Mumbai Indians Weakness: Last year they tried out five different opening combinations throughout the tournament. In fact, getting a settled opening pair has always been Mumbai’s problem. This year, either Parthiv Patel or Lendl Simmons is expected to partner Rohit at the top.
Lasith Malinga’s absence in the first few matches can affect Mumbai Indian’s game plans in the initial matches of the tournament. However, either Tim Southee or Mitchell Johnson can chip in for him. England’s Jos Butler will not be available after May 14 so replacing him that too at the business half of the event might be an issue as well.
