Squad analysis

Batting. This is one of the strongest top orders in the league. Faf du Plessis, Phil Salt and Max Holden, who made 359 runs for Desert Vipers last season, can all open, with Sediqullah Atal as another option. Rovman Powell, the hero of the Capitals’ Season 3 title, and Marcus Stoinis provide the finishing power.

All-rounders. Stoinis, Dasun Shanaka, Karim Janat and USA’s Hassan Khan give the side four seam-bowling all-rounders, plus UAE’s Aayan Khan with left-arm spin.

Bowling. Noor Ahmad’s left-arm wrist spin and Mustafizur Rahman’s cutters suit Dubai’s slower pitches. Luke Wood, Matt Potts and Mark Adair add pace.

Who’s gone. Waqar Salamkheil, who took 18 wickets and won the Best Bowler award last season, has moved to Sharjah Warriorz. Jordan Cox, their top scorer last season, is not in the Season 5 squad.

Players to watch

  • Faf du Plessis. Their $300,000 headline buy. His fee briefly set a new auction record before Gurbaz, Livingstone and Farooqi went higher.
  • Phil Salt. One of the most explosive openers in the world, picked up at his $80,000 base price.
  • Rovman Powell. Led the Capitals to the 2025 title and remains their main finisher.
  • Noor Ahmad. The young Afghan wrist spinner is a match-winner in UAE conditions.
  • Aayan Khan. The UAE all-rounder cost $95,000, one of the highest prices paid for a UAE player this year.
